Red Dress Awareness Walk 2024
Join the SEIU-West First Nations Métis Inuit Committee (FNMIC) in a walk on May 5 to bring awareness for Missing &Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit (IWG2S) people.
April 9 – 15 is National Medical Laboratory Week and we are here to take a closer look at what medical laboratory professionals do and to celebrate our members! Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) are an important, and often invisible part of the health care team. They are behind every lab test result, providing vital information to guide patient care and treatment.
Gail is a Medical Laboratory Technologist II and works at an acute care facility in Saskatoon. She has been a MLT for more than 35 years. During this time, she has been part of many changes in technology, processes and analyzers that the lab tests are run on. Gail has a Medical Laboratory Technology Diploma and completes continuing education every year to maintain her license.
In any given day, Gail runs lab tests on bodily fluids like blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluids that are ordered by physicians. She then returns the results to physicians to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The best part of her job is knowing that her work helps to diagnose and treat patients so they can heal and get well.
The combination of science and being able to take an active role in caring for people appealed to Gail and inspired her work as an MLT. Throughout her career, she has been promoted to a Medical Laboratory Technologist II, which allows her to ensure quality control standards are being met while serving patients. She is also able to help institute some of the new machinery and work up new test methods to be run on them. This ultimately provides improvements to currently run lab tests, as well as adds new tests to the test menu, all of which aid patient treatment and wellbeing.
Medical Laboratory Technologists see patients like no one else. They can detect and identify diseases and abnormalities as they test and analyze samples. They combine science and compassion every day, and we are proud to highlight the important work that Gail and her co-workers do as we celebrate National Medical Laboratory Week!

Rally Notice: Underfunded, Understaffed, and Undervalued
SEIU-West members will be gathering outside Everett Hindley’s office in Swift Current at 1 pm on Tuesday April 30, 2024 to rally around strong public services in Saskatchewan.
“All of our public services are suffering under the current government,” says Barbara Cape, President of SEIU-West. “Healthcare, education, social services, are being chronically underfunded, understaffed, and undervalued by the current government.”
